The weight of Gargan’s slumped body pulling against his pinned hand was making the puncture of the icepick look more like a long see-through gash. When the icepick finally pulled free, Gargan slumped to the floor. Jax bent over and cleaned the icepick on Gargan’s tunic. When he was satisfied with the results, he slipped it back into its sheath and secured his cuff. He then ejected the shells in his derringer and reloaded.

Turning back toward the bar his eyes searched for the bartender who was crouched down at the far end with only his eyes visible. When they made eye contact Jax said “Sorry about damaging your counter.”

The bartender looked at him with amazement. “Are you kidding? In my seventy years of tending bar, I’ve never seen death dished out so efficiently.”

“Thanks… I guess” replied Jax.

“No. No. You, my friend bring mayhem to a whole new level... The only people dead in this room are the people you and your crew wanted dead” he beamed. “Usually, half the bystanders end up dead… and that’s for something trivial like two males arguing over latinum or females or something else not worth the effort.”

Sensing that the violence had abated and there was no longer a threat from anyone in the bar Jax ordered the Poison Clan to stand down. With that the bar’s patrons hesitantly began to reseat themselves trying to pretend that nothing had occurred. Some built up the nerve to go over to the tables of the dead pirates to look them over and shake their heads at the carnage. There were a few that came over and spit on some of the bodies.

“I take it Gargan wasn’t very well loved around here” asked Jax looking at the bartender?

“Are you kidding? There aren’t three people on this planet who wouldn’t have liked to have done what you and you crew did.” His smiled turned to a frown. “Unfortunately, one of the three is Krell.” He shook his head in disappointment. “He’s really going to be angry when he finds out Gargan is dead.”

“So what made Gargan so special?”

“Who knows? My guess is that besides worshipping the ground Krell walks on Gargan was willing to do all his dirty work. If Krell didn’t like you, Gargan would take care of you. If Krell thought you weren’t paying him his tribute, Gargan would get it out of you.”

“Yep, that sounds like the Gargan I remember.” Jax started to say something else but the bartender interrupted with a chuckle. “Where are my manners? They call me Blin. What do they call you and your crew?”

Blin was a short, portly male or a species Jax had never encountered. To Jax he looked like a mix of Ferengi and Lurian. The two species’ home worlds are relatively close but to Jax knowledge, their DNA was incompatible.

“You can call me Scorpion and collectively we are called the Poison Clan.” Pointing to each of his crew he said their names.

The Poison Clan you say” said Blin scratching his head.
